I've done it a little bit I will say there are a specific set of skills that are very necessary to do this type of work But as far as audio transcription goes it's a very solid gig and it's something that you can do basically anytime that you want to Depending on the company that you're signed up with. Now the first one I'm going to talk about is TranscribeMe! This is a company that claims to have the industry's best rates The payments start at $20 per audio hour so that is a very good rate Now they are a little bit different from the other companies in that the audio files They receive are split into chunks and worked on by different transcriptionists so that means you know if you've maybe only got a few minutes as opposed to like 20 or 30 minutes it might be a little bit easier to Pick up some gigs with transcribe me as opposed to some of the other companies Transcriptionists with TranscribeMe! Are independent contractors that get completely flexible hours. They're working from home of course And they claim to offer growth and learning opportunities and promote from within So it could be something we're over time you could kind of develop your skills and get to higher paying positions I know a lot of times They have people that are like editors or reviewers that are going to make a little bit more money so that can be an option Like the other companies I have mentioned- I'm going to mention in this video- You must pass an assessment to become a transcriptionist with TranscribeMe! Transcriptionists with TranscribeMe! Can request payments through PayPal at any time and receive payments for all work completed on a weekly basis. Now Rev this is a company I've profiled previously, of course, basically with Rev audio transcriptionists get to choose their own hours.
They're paid per audio minute and that ranges from 45 cents to 65 cents per minute and Their payments are processed weekly via PayPal You don't need any special equipment to become an audio transcriptionist, and they do have their own software So you don't need a purchase any software either Once you have a little more experience under your belt, you can officially become a "Revver" and earn 25% more per audio minute, so you are rewarded for sticking with it and Continuing to do different jobs After you've signed up with them. Transcribe com Now this one is geared towards transcriptionists that have a little more experience under their belts They offer our home based work with completely flexible scheduling Now they do require that you have experience with transcription software, and you must have your own software So that is a requirement, just take note of that, they do highly recommend Using a foot pedal although they don't require it. They don't post specific details on their pay rates But they do specify they offer daily payments through PayPal if you're interested in doing work with Transcribe com, you can be either an Audio Transcriptionist or a Transcription Editor who reviews the work from other transcriptionists. To become a Transcriptionist with Transcribe com you must pass their assessment.
Once you're accepted in, they offer one-on-one support to guide you on your way if you have any questions. AccuTranGlobal. This is a company that's based out of Canada and they offer work for contractors and North America provided they have a U.S. Or Canadian bank account.
So you can work with them if you're in North America like maybe you're in Mexico, for example, but you do have to have a United States or Canadian bank account. They have been an operation since 2002 and offer audio transcription services to various clients across the world. Payments for transcriptionists are processed once a month on the 15th via direct deposit. When you're starting out with them, your pay rates can either be by the word or the minute depending on the project.
Now their pay rates are going to be like a very small amount either per word or about 40 cents per audio minute So it is pretty comparable to some of the other companies. They offer opportunities for advancement for experience Transcriptionists, and you do have to type at least 70 words per minute and have access to a computer that runs Windows. So if you're on a Mac you have to get special software so that you can run Windows on your Mac computer. So 3Play Media This is a company that contracts workers to become Transcript Editors.
In this position you will both transcribe audio as well as edit imperfect manuscripts using their own special transcription software. They offer positions to both English and Spanish speakers. So this could be something that could benefit you if you are a fluent Spanish speaker. All of the work the Transcript Editors do is done remotely from home, and they going to choose which projects they work on.
You must pass an assessment to become a Transcript Editor, as well as type at a speed of at least 75 words per minute. Their pay depends on the project that you're working on, but according to their website it is the equivalent of 10 to 30 dollars per hour and... That's... You know, those are pretty good rates.
From what I've seen this company seems to have a pretty good reputation overall, although some commentators on Reddit I did notice said that it took quite a while in some cases, like several months to get approved after they passed the assessment. So just take note of that if you sign up with them It could take a while based on their business needs before you're actually accepted and could get work. Now the last thing I'm gonna talk about is becoming a freelance transcriptionist. This is something where, you know, after you've maybe worked with some of these companies and you've built up some skills at that point you can go ahead and decide, "Hey I want to just be a freelancer and post that I have this skill available to do for people and set my own rates." There's websites out there like Fiverr and Upwork where you can, find freelance gigs for a variety of things, but audio transcription is one of those things you can find them for.
You can post on local job boards, you can try to look you can try to network with local businesses and universities. So there are different ways available where you can try to... Get some business and get some clients if you decide to be a freelance transcriptionist. Now of course if you decide to branch out on your own you will need your own equipment like transcription software and possibly a foot pedal.
However, if you are self-employed those could be tax write-offs, so that is something to consider. Now the last thing I'll say just kind of in conclusion is that there are some companies out there that offer transcription gigs that are, you know, really good companies but there's also some that are not so great so I would definitely do your research. I tried to include companies in this video that seem to have a good reputation but there are other companies that I won't name that I did read some things about that we're not so great. I will say in particular I would be very wary of companies that require you to pay money to apply.
I've seen this with a couple different companies and I just think that is a huge red flag if you're trying to make money it doesn't make sense that you would pay them money to apply. So I would be very skeptical of that. Another thing is that there are some very expensive training programs on the internet for Audio Transcriptionists. I'm not bashing these programs.
I do think they could probably offer you some value if they're coming from, you know, accredited sources, like people that have experience with audio transcription. I just don't necessarily think it's worth it when you consider you could, you know, learn transcription skills while you are getting paid money to do it. So like what the Rev. With TranslateMe! They don't require previous experience so you could sign up with them and basically get kind of that on-the-job training, and then you don't have to pay like this expensive, you know, fee to take a class to learn how to do it.
So anyway, I hope you found this video informative and helpful. If you've tried out these different transcription gigs, let me know what that experience was like down in the comment section below.
